Raymond Dodgson founded Dodgson’s in 1961 trading in what is now Toymaster; his son Tony carried on the business and bought the current premises in 1997. Glenn House, the current proprietor, started work at Dodgson’s in 1981 and bought the business in 2005.
I asked Glenn what he stocked! The shop is packed full of interesting, attractive and useful things. He said they stock housewares, tools, electrical fittings, ironmongery, vacuum bags, batteries, torches, timber (cut to length), plywood sheets (cut to size), doormats, brooms, adhesives, plumbing, draught excluders, hose pipes and fittings, candles, spades. I think we get the picture! Dodgson’s stock pretty much anything for your homeware DIY needs. They even stock individual screws so you get what you require for the job. He tells me he sells candles in threes so you will not be able to get four (fork) handles!!
It is refreshing to go into a shop and be served by people with DIY knowledge who are happy to offer advice in the sometimes-bewildering world of DIY. Glenn also said if he hasn’t got what you need, he will do his best to get it for you. A specialist shop like this is a rarity these days. For a shop that sells such practical things it has a lovely atmosphere, due in no small part to the friendly service and help you will receive when you visit.
